A circular walk from Whiteways Lodge, down into the Arun Valley.

This circular walk joins the South Downs Way near Bury Hill and follows it down to the River Arun. Follows the river on the South side of Houghton Bridge and up through Houghton village,returning to the start at Whiteways Lodge.

Distance 6 miles. Time 2½ hours.

Go to the end of the car park and take the path through the bushes. Photo on the left Turn left at the field and follow the path round the edge of the field. Photo on the right.

At the end of the field you join the South Downs Way. Here you turn right. Photo on the right.
After a short distance you come to a road near the top of Bury Hill.Turn right and after a short distance carefully cross the road and continue on the SDW. Photo on the right.
The path now drops downhill with good views of the Arun Valley.
At the road cross over and continue on the SDW to the gate shown in the photo on the right.You now go up onto the river bank and walk down to the white bridge, where you cross over the River Arun and turn right.
Follow the river bank for a short distance and then drop down to the gate, shown in the photo on the right
At the road turn to the right and follow this pavement all the way round to Houghton Bridge. Carefully cross the bridge and then cross over taking the footpath along the river bank. Photo on the right.
Go over the stile and the path goes to the right. Photo on the right. Drop down into the field and head across to the stile shown in the photo below left.This field can get very wet and muddy in the winter.
Go over the stile and head straight across to the bridge shown in the photo on the right.

Continue on and in places you will find wooden boards shown in the photo on the left.When you reach the part shown in the photo on the right this short bit can be flooded in the winter to three or four inches of water if it is high tide and we have had a lot of rain.

If you get to this point and there is to much water go back to Houghton Bridge and follow the pink route on the map,round passing the white bridge to the road. Then turn left down the road and it will bring you out near the pub.

When you come to the path shown in the photo on the left turn right and walk to the gate, shown in the photo on the right.
Head up now through the village of Houghton to the main road where you turn left.
Cross over and walk along passing the pub .
At the sign shown in the photo on the left you go left and join the path uphill. Cross over the drive to a house and just continue uphill. Photo on the right. After a few hundred yards the path goes between hedges. Picture below left.

Eventually coming out into an open field where you cross straight over to the road. Carefully cross over and turn to your left and you are back in the car park
