A circular walk from High Titten Lane near Houghton

Traveling towards Storrington on the B2139 take the first road on your right after Amberley railway station. Drive up to the junction on your left and park on the grass verge.

Distance 5 miles. Time 2 hours.

 
Head up the road that bends to the right, ignore the South Downs Way route on your left and carry on up the road to Downs Farm.

Take the footpath on the left and follow this track with the farm buildings on your right.The South Downs Way joins the track from the left and carry's on straight ahead up Amberley Mount. Take the track to the right shown in the picture centre below.
 

 

 

Downs Farm is now over to your right and after
about 100 yards you need to leave this track, onto
the path on the right shown in the picture above.

 

You now need to keep the fence on your right
and carry on straight ahead

 

 

Good views all around

Ignore any paths that go of to the left and keep the fence on your right.
When you reach the trees shown in the picture on the right the path goes to
the right and you can see the path much clearer as shown in the pictures below

The path now swings to the left, down to a gate
shown in the pictures below

 

Head straight across the small field and take the path on the left
that heads uphill shown in the picture on the left.In the summer
both sides of this sloping path are a mass of wild flowers.

  Keep heading up the path to the gate and then on to the junction shown in the picture above right  

Good views in all directions

Looking back over to Downs Farm

Turn right and carry on down the stony path shown in the
picture on the left to the junction shown in the picture
above where you go to the right

You now pass a barn on your left and eventually join
a narrow tarmac road with good views all around.
Keep on this road to the junction shown in the picture
below left,where you turn right.

 
Follow the road round passing some houses on your right,then take the footpath on the left shown in the picture above.This takes you through some trees,bends to the right and eventually to the River Arun, where you turn to the right.
 

You now walk the river bank all the way to the stile,
shown in the picture below middle and on to the road.

Houghton Bridge over the Arun

  Turn right and you need to take care at this point and keep close to the wall,getting across the bridge as quickly as possible. Over to the left is a cafe. Once you are over the bridge you need to cross over the road and carry on up the road passing under the railway bridge.  
 
Follow the path round going behind the hedge shown in the picture on the left, to the junction shown in the picture on the right,where you cross over and walk up High Titten Lane back to your car.
 

As you walk up this road if you look over to your left you
can see Amberley Castle, as shown in the picture on the right.
