A Walk from the Trundle at Goodwood in West Sussex

This circular walk takes you to the top of the Trundle Hill with splendid views all around. Down to Binderton and crosses the disused railway line that ran from Chichester to Midhurst. Crosses the river Lavant and then along to West Dean. Returning back up to the Trundle and your car.

On the A286 at Singleton take the road up to Goodwood and park in the car park on the left. Across the road is the Trundle Hill

Ordnance Survey Map: Landranger No 197/ 1-50000 Or for more detail Explorer No 120/ 1-25000

Distance 5 miles.
Time 2 hours.

The Trundle hill

Cross the road from the car park and take the steps, then go through the gate shown in the picture on the left and then head uphill to the top of the Trundle. Look to your left as you climb and you will see Goodwood race course. Picture on the right. On a clear day from here you can see all along the coastal plain and see the Isle of Wight.

Goodwood race course

Take the path that runs diagonal to the right and then heads down hill on a stone path to the gate in the picture on the left. Carry on to the gate in the picture above and pass the small car park on the left to the junction in the picture below left, where you carry straight on ahead.

After passing the trees in the picture above on your right is a house. Ignore the path on the right and keep to the path straight ahead along open fields, all the way to the gate in the picture on the right. There are splendid views to your left,Butlins white dome can be seen in Bognor Regis, the spire of Chichester cathedral, Chichester harbour and the Isle of Wight in the distance.

Straight ahead in the distance is Kingley Vale

Once through the gate take the down hill path to the left as shown in the picture on the left to a gate. Pass through it and you soon come to the old disused railway line. Picture above shows a bridge over it.

River Lavant in June

Carry straight on and from the left the Centurion Way that runs from Chichester to West Dean joins the path. Next on your right you see the River Lavant, picture on the left taken in June.To think a few years ago this flooded Chichester when the volume of water could not get through under the city. Cross the bridge in the picture on the right and carry on to the road.

Bridge over the Lavant

Turn right at the road and it is now necessary to walk the footpath to West Dean. It is well back from the road and a lot of it is behind trees. Keep a lookout on your right for a long wall going uphill, as you follow this up later on the walk. When the path ends turn right. Picture on the right.

At the end of the road the walk crosses the bridge shown in the picture on the left. To have a look around West Dean turn left and follow the road round. In the picture on the right the road to the left takes you to the pub and the post office. If you carry straight on you come to the church. When you have finished having a look around retrace you footsteps back to the bridge shown in the picture below left.

Cross over the bridge and follow the lane that bears to the right. You now follow this wall for quite a long way. Picture above right. After coming out of a wooded area turn left and on your left is the house you passed earlier on the walk. Carry on to the junction in the picture on the right and take the gate indicated in the picture.

The path now heads across the field diagonally to your left and you are heading for a finger post and an embankment shown in the picture on the left. The day we did the walk we walked a short distance along the hedge and then cut across at an angle, then spotted where other people had walked and following this led us to the finger post. Carry on along the embankment to the road where you turn right and your car is just around the corner. Caution is needed on this short piece of road.
